Summer Salon 2012 /2013

Our thirty-seventh Summer Salon runs from 8 December until 31 January 2013. As always, we have a wide selection of works by South African artists, including paintings, ceramics and sculpture. Amongst the regular contributors are Ryno Swart, showing some pastel stillifes and studies of a woman. Kobus Louw, Jeffrey Appollis, Kervin Cupido, Dawid Toua, Natalie Hirschman and Selwin Pekeur will be showing new work in various mediums while Erik Laubscher will be showing a number of paintings: a large canvas title "Dry Summer Lands", as well as a watercolour and a pastel. A small collection of paintings by the late Herbert Coetzee will also shown. Jill Colley presents a number of her exquisite studies of roses and fruit and Ryno Swart will show a selection of his magnificent oils and pastels. We welcome new artists to the Gallery, including graphic artist Leonard Shapiro whose work almost has a Zen quality. Paarl artist Shany van der Berg will present three oils painted with a limited palette, which adds to their charm. A number of works depicting leopards will be on view for auction through the Paardeberg Sustainability Initiative (PSI), to raise funds for the Cape Leopard Trust Project on the Paardeberg, near Paarl.

Hope to see you soon at the Gallery!

David's Comment

As we start to enjoy the longer evenings and warmer weather, we are preparing for our thirty-seventh Summer Salon. We hope you may be able to join us to celebrate the opening on Saturday 8 December between 10am and 2pm.

We have a number of new artists showing works in the Gallery (see side story) as well as one of ourlong-standing friends, Frederike Stokhuyzen, who is our featured artist this month. We are delighted to have been exhibiting Frederike's work for almost twenty years.

Her style, technique and great love of mountains and natural beauty have placed her as one of the Western Cape's foremost contemporary landscape artists. Having recently celebrated her 50th year as a practising artist, she is also one of the few South African painters who use only a palette knife to execute her oils. Perhaps you already know all this – but did you know she has also had a butterfly named after her and runs Vintage Bentley tours around South Africa? Enjoy reading more below about this talented artist.

Please also note our new opening hours on weekends - Saturdays we are open from 08h30 to 13h00 and on Sundays by appointment.

Featured Artist :Frederike Stokhuyzen

a talented artist, a vintage car enthusiast and a butterfly!

While there may be a number of artists that capture the magnificence of our natural landscape, there are few, if any, who can say they have had a natural wonder named after them. Acclaimed artist Frederike Stokhuyzen is one of them. With her husband John White, she is a dedicated lepidopterist – someone who studies butterflies – and they have combined this interest on their travels with her love of painting.

As field workers for the University of Cape Town, they provide new information on rare butterflies in the Western and Northern Cape. Over the last few years, they have discovered a number of new species of butterfly, and have been honoured to have ones named after them. The species Lepidochrysops Frederikeae hails from the Calvinia district, while John's namesake, the Chrysoritis Whitei, is from the Port Elizabeth region.

Frederike has enjoyed a life-long affair with painting and captures her much-loved mountains and natural landscapes as she has experienced them.

She studied Fine Art at Rhodes University and at the Central School of Art in London, and then returned to teach art in Cape Town before becoming a full-time, professional artist. Her first exhibition was held in 1960, and she has since presented work at numerous solo and group exhibitions, in South Africa and Europe, including the Royal Society of Oil Painters in London. She has also been commissioned to produce works for many corporate clients here and in the USA.

Frederike's passion for travel and the outdoors has served her well, and her works depict scenes everywhere from the Kruger Park and Namibia, to the Cederberg and the English countryside. When inspired by an eye-catching moment on her travels, she recreates it using pen-and-wash- sketches, while John takes photographs as back up. These sketches are often stand-alone artworks, but she uses them to provide a reference for her larger, studio oil paintings. She is one of the few South African painters who only use a palette knife for their oils, and this presents a particularly interesting texture.

Says David, "Frederike has an excellent eye for composition and her works display a sense of immediacy, especially with her larger paintings. Whether she is painting wildlife, landscapes, flowerscapes or rockscapes, her technique brings a gravitas to her work."

"I am inspired by the rhythm of the South African landscape – its boldness, its linearity and its subtle or vibrant colours all falling into a unique South African kaleidoscoape," says Frederike.

John and Frederike also share a love of vintage cars which has led them to organise specialist tours around South Africa. They own a 1928 4.5 litre Bentley, and the tours use either vintage Bentleys or Silver Ghost Rolls Royces. "It is a unique way to see our beautiful country," says Frederike. "We held the first tour in 1983, and they have been so successful that we recently completed our seventh International Vintage Bentley Tour."
